VENUES OF THE MEETING
1. Universitat de les Illes Balears – Sa Riera Building
Calle de Miquel dels Sants Oliver, 2
07013 Palma de Mallorca
SA RIERA BUILDING:
The current Sa Riera building (formerly the headquarters of the School of Commerce) is a construction of eclectic and functional forms, sober and balanced, with occasional regionalist touches. The project was designed by the architect Tomàs Gómez-Acebo Retortillo and the architects Jaume Alenyar and Josep Alomar Bosch (1914-16) directed the works.
It is a historic building that has given much of itself. Formerly the headquarters of the School of Commerce, it housed the Faculty of Business Studies and the Faculty of Law. It is an old building that also needs a budget allocation to maintain its great prestige and charm. The government team has been working hard to improve its infrastructure. We must bear in mind that it is now the only active venue in Palma that connects the city with the University, where master’s degrees are taught, congresses are organised, certain cultural and institutional activities are carried out through the Vice-rectorate for Culture, Social Projection and University Venues, ICE courses are held, there is a study room open to students and it is also the rehearsal place for the University’s choirs.
2. Caixaforum Palma
Building of the Gran Hotel de Palma.
Address
Plaza de Weyler, 3
07001 Palma
GRAN HOTEL:
In 1993, «la Caixa» Welfare Projects converted the former Gran Hotel de Palma building into a cultural centre open to the general public.
This jewel of modernist architecture contains a permanent collection by the painter Hermen Anglada-Camarasa. The «la Caixa» Anglada-Camarasa Collection offers a unique testimony on paper of the legendary Catalan artist. It is made up of 400 pieces (oil paintings, drawings, prints, lithographs, sculptures and personal objects) that formed part of the artist’s collection. The «la Caixa» Banking Foundation acquired this legacy from Anglada-Camarasa’s relatives, and since 1993 has been exhibiting his collection permanently at CaixaForum Palma, a building designed by Lluís Domènech i Montaner. Visitors can enjoy the artist’s works through exhibitions whose content is renewed every year.
